People have access to information and services enabling participation in informed decision-making regarding their own lives

Outcome

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have access to information and services enabling participation in informed decision-making regarding their own lives.

Target

Target 17: By 2026, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have equal levels of digital inclusion

Summary on Target

The Access to Information target measures Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s access to the information and services that can enable participation in informed decision-making about their lives. This target will measure improvements in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s access to the internet and digital inclusion, accessibility of online services, and the availability and use of culturally relevant media.

Progress toward achieving this target will have a positive enabling effect on other Closing the Gap outcomes including health, social and economic outcomes.

Baseline data

Baseline data is presented for target 17 on digital inclusion. The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Survey (NATSISS) provides data on the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people able to access the internet in their home. Data is presented at a national level, and for each state and territory where available.

National Target Trajectory

Currently available data from the NATSISS on home access to the internet does not include comparable data on non-Indigenous Australians. This means that estimating a trajectory to achieve parity is not currently possible.
